WHAT IS GOLD-PLATED JEWELRY?
Gold-plated jewelry is also marketed as gold wash, gold clad or bonded gold, but it all means the same thing - a thin layer of gold firmly bonded onto a core of cheaper, stronger metal using electron-magnetic plating. Since solid gold is soft and easily bent, the base metal makes gold-plated jewelry more resistant to dents, nicks or being bent out of shape. The purity of the gold used in gold plating ranges just like solid gold. The higher the purity of the gold, the more gold-like the color is.
